Inter MRSM Debate
Assalamualaikum and hello guys!
Today I would like to share my experiences of being the school debaters. Hehe. Joining debate was so exciting for me since I love to generate ideas and argues with other people. I learned debate since I was in Form 1, and the teacher who taught me was Sir Gilbert Wong Kea Kiat (he is now a Deputy Principal in MRSM Tun Abdul Razak, Pekan, Pahang. Although I learned debate earlier, I started to represent my college since I was Form 4 (due to several reasons, in which I don't want to elaborate :P). The MRSM Tun Mustapha, Tawau debaters were :-
- Mohd Nurman bin Aman Setia (Prime Minister)
- Shafiq Danial bin Abdul Hamid (Prime Minister)
- Muhammad Afiq bin Abdul Wahid (Deputy PM) <-- Me :)
- Shaileen binti Samsuddin (Deputy PM)
- Johannes Low Jun Wei (Defence Minister/ Whip)
We were those who will representing the college in any debate competition. Usually, I didn't join the UIA Debate because I joined other competition during the exact same day. Hence, other debaters will substitute my position. I gained a lot of debating experience in Inter MRSM Debate.
When I was Form 4, there was an Inter-Borneo MRSM Debate in MRSM Betong, Sarawak. Luckily, MRSM Tawau was ranked in 4th place, and I was ranked 8th individually out of 30 debaters. That prepared me for the Inter-MRSM Debate Competition which was held in MRSM Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan. At there, we met a lot of great debate teams. The motions of the debate were mind-boggling. One of the motion that I remembered was THW Allow Government to Spy on Its Citizens (MRSM Tawau VS MRSM Kuantan). It was a close debate with margin only 0.7. Pheww! We got 3 wins out of 5 matches. We won against MRSM Kuala Terengganu, MRSM Sandakan and MRSM Gerik kot.... We were lost against MRSM TGS and MRSM Kuantan.
When I was Form 5, the Inter-MRSM Debate was held in MRSM Batu Pahat. Congrats to the Malay Debate Team since they were the Runner-Up for the competition. For the English Team, we were also recorded the best achievements for our college, since MRSM Tawau was ranked in 13th place and we were qualified into Octo-Final Stage. Some of the issues we debate on were about local songs on radios, negotiating terrories, blaming guardians for disabled children's faults, and so on. We got 4 wins out of 6 matches. We won against MRSM Kuala Krai, MRSM Merbok, MRSM Batu Pahat and MRSM Sandakan. We were lost against MRSM Kuantan and MRSM Mukah. In Octo-Final, we were matched against MRSM Mukah. We were lost, though, with judges decision 2-1.
It was a great experience in debates. I knew I'd been thinking a lot of times before on why I didn't join Malay Debate since it was easier. However, for your information, English Debate motions were much more challenging than Malay Debate. And it would be helping you in interviews since you'll be pushing yourself to generate brilliant ideas.
Thank you.
